Swirl marks, buffer trails, and random scratches scatter light and make even clean gelcoat look dull.

Heavy oxidation turns gelcoat chalky white and rough to the touch. If your boat looks more gray than its original color, oxidation is the culprit.

Frequently Asked Questions about boat detailing

Please reach us at max@maxwaxmarine.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

For most boat owners in Greater Boston, a full professional detail once or twice per season is the right cadence. We recommend a correction and protection detail at the start of the season to prep the hull, and a maintenance detail or wash and wax before winter storage. Boats kept in the water full-time benefit from more frequent attention due to constant salt and biological exposure.

Waxing adds a sacrificial protection layer on top of the existing surface; it fills minor imperfections temporarily but doesn't remove them. Paint correction physically removes a microscopic layer of gelcoat or clear coat to eliminate swirl marks, oxidation, and scratches. Correction first, protection second is always the right order. Waxing over an uncorrected surface just locks the defects in place.

A thorough wash, decontamination, and wax on a 25–35 foot boat typically takes a full day. Paint correction adds time depending on the severity of the defects: a heavily oxidized hull may need 1–2 additional days of correction work. Ceramic coating application requires the surface to be fully corrected first, then adds another day for application and cure time. We'll give you a timeline estimate when we assess your vessel.

For most boat owners who want to minimize maintenance and maximize long-term protection, yes. Marine ceramic coating bonds to the gelcoat at a chemical level, creating a surface that water sheets off, salt doesn't stick to, and UV can't degrade as quickly. The upfront cost is higher than wax, but the protection lasts 2–5 years versus 3–6 months for traditional wax; making it the better value for owners who keep their boat looking sharp.

We detail all fiberglass, gelcoat, and painted vessels from 20 to 100+ feet — including center consoles, express cruisers, sportfishers, sailing yachts, and large motoryachts. Brands we regularly work on include Azimut, Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Viking, Hinckley, Grady-White, Pursuit, Cabo, and Regulator, among many others.
